HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES

VISITS WYCHWOOD BREWERY

Friday 26th October 2007

HRH The Prince of Wales visited Oxfordshire’s Wychwood Brewery last Friday to meet the people who brew his Duchy Originals Organic Ales.

Rupert Thompson, Wychwood Brewery’s Managing Director, introduced The Prince to the Head Brewer, Jeremy Moss and the Wychwood brewing team. Also there to meet His Royal Highness were some of the hop growers and maltsters who supply Wychwood with the ingredients for their wide portfolio of beers.

Rupert Thompson said of the visit,

“We are all absolutely delighted and honoured that The Prince of Wales took so much time from his busy schedule to visit the Wychwood Brewery. It is a huge tribute to everyone who works at Wychwood that The Prince, who was so obviously fascinated in the production process, was able to recognise all the hard work that goes into our beers.”

Attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire and the Mayor of Witney, The Prince was guided around every facet of the brewing process before meeting those involved in selling, packaging and distribution.

He heard about the growth of Wychwood’s flagship beer Hobgoblin and was invited to pull a pint in the cellar bar which was decorated with carved pumpkins in preparation for the Halloween celebrations. He also tasted a matching of the brewery’s beers with local cheeses.

Brakspear are sponsors of the Bampton ‘Aunt Sally’ League and at the end of the visit The Prince practiced this subtle art with some effect in the brewery forecourt.  He was entertained by dancing from the Bampton Morris Dancers in their traditional white smocked hose.

Notes to the Editor

Wychwood brews a range of different ales including Wychcraft blonde beer, BeeWyched Fair Trade honey beer, Goliath and a quartet of Brakspear beers - Brakspear Bitter, Brakspear Organic, Brakspear EPA and Brakspear Triple. These beers are fermented in the specially reconstructed Brakspear Tun room with its unique ‘double drop ‘system.

Wychwood also makes Duchy Original Ale and Duchy Winter Ale and The Prince was able to watch a mashing of his own beer and add hops to the copper.
