Eurobrew Board Frequently Asked Questions

1. Supported browsers

Netscape 3/4/6/7, IE4/5/6, Mozilla and Opera on Windows and Linux, and any other browser which supports Java JDK 1.0 or greater. For Mac OSX users, we recommend using Safari.

2. When I connect to the Eurobrew Board why do I get a blank window?

If you don't see the whiteboard and chat window when you connect, it means either that you do not have Java installed and enabled, or your browser has not been able to connect to the Eurobrew Board server. The first time you connect (and after any updates to the site), it will take a while for your browser to download the Java classes, so leave it at least 5 minutes. The messages in the status window at the bottom of your browser will tell you if it is still downloading. If it still doesn't work, check to make sure your browser has Java installed and enabled. You can download the java virtual machine from: http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

3. Is the board moderated?

Yes, the board is periodically monitored and anyone overly offensive is kicked off.

4. Your java applet crashed my browser/system!

There are currently no known bugs in Eurobrew Board, and even if there were any bugs they could not crash your computer (or even your browser), because java is an interpreted language. If you are encountering crashes using Eurobrew Board, it means there is a problem with your system. Try the following:

  • If using Windows, do a "Windows Update" (from the start menu) and download the latest service packs and critical updates.
  • Go to the website for your graphics card and download the latest drivers if you do not already have them.
  • Try using a different web browser (we recommend Mozilla).
  • Ensure you have sufficient virtual memory available.

5. Why does the applet not redraw properly when I use the scroll bar in my browser?

Certain older browsers had bugs in the Java JDK which caused this problem. You should upgrade to the latest browser and/or Java JDK.

6. Why does the text window sometimes freeze in the middle of displaying a message but the whiteboard is still working?

There is a bug in Windows 95/98 which causes the contents of a textarea to be limited to 32k. You can clear the text window by choosing "Clear Text" from the chat menu (when the applet is floated).

7. Why do some users have an '@' before their name?

This means that the user has admin privileges and can ban people from the board.

8. How do I print the contents of the whiteboard window?

In most browsers, the easiest way of printing is to simply press the browser's PRINT button. If you are using the JavaScript GUI, there should also be a print button on the user interface. If you are using the standard (non JavaScript GUI), you will need to press the FLOAT button, and then choose "Print" from the Applet pull-down menu.

Note that there is a bug in Java which causes the printout to appear blank if you have certain Adobe software installed. If this happens, try changing the colour depth to either 256 colours or 24bit (right click on the Windows desktop, choose Properties, then click on the Settings tab).

There is a bug in the 1.4.1 JDK which causes multiple "ok to print" dialogs to appear when printing. We recommend using the 1.3.1 version of the Sun JDK which is generally faster, more stable and has fewer bugs.

Note that if using Internet Explorer (version 5 or greater) if you print using the java print function (rather than pressing the browser's PRINT button) you will need to enable printing from java applets, as follows:

  • Under the tools menu, select Internet Options
  • Select the security tab
  • Click the Custom Level button
  • Scroll down to Microsoft VM Java Options
  • Select Custom
  • Click on the Edit Permissions tab
  • Under Run Unsigned Content, select Run In Sandbox
  • Under Additional Unsigned Permission, scroll down to Printing
  • Under Printing, select Enable
  • Click OK in dialogs, and restart Internet Explorer

9. Why does the Flood Fill not work on Netscape?

There is a bug in Netscape 4 when running in 32bit colour mode under Windows which causes the flood fill to not work correctly. Solution: change to 24bit or 8bit colour mode.

10. Why do the Javascript versions not work on Internet Explorer on the Mac?

Internet Explorer on the Mac does not support communication between javascript and java. We recommend that you use Safari or Mozilla instead.

11. Flood fill is very slow - can I turn it off?

Press the FLOAT button to float the applet in a separate window, then choose the "Allow flood fills" from the Whiteboard menu so that it is unticked.

12. Why does Eurobrew Board disconnect with my DLink/Netgear ADSL router?

There is a bug in a version of the firmware for the DLink DSL-504 ADSL router (and some Netgear routers) which causes the NAT routing table to discard any entries for TCP/IP connections which have been idle for 5 minutes or longer. If you are experiencing disconnections from the Eurobrew Board after being idle for 5 minutes (and your internet connection itself does not disconnect), you should contact the manufacturer of your ADSL router to obtain the latest firmware.

13. Why does my screen get corrupted when using Eurobrew Board with JDK1.4?

There is a bug in the older ATI graphics drivers which can cause this problem. If you are using an ATI card you should upgrade to the latest drivers.

14. Can I use a graphics tablet with Eurobrew Board?

Yes, you can use any graphics tablet with Eurobrew Board if it works as a pointer device. We recommend the Wacom Graphire tablet

15. Why have I been banned from the Eurobrew board?

There are 3 reasons why you may be banned from the Eurobrew board:

  • You have done something that you shouldn't have, and one of the admins banned you (see below).
  • People from your range of IP addresses have been repeatedly causing trouble, and as a result we have temporarily banned your IP range.
  • You were banned by mistake. This does not happen very often, but it is a possibility if the board is very busy. Sometimes it is difficult for the admin to see exactly who is drawing what on the Eurobrew Board.

When you are banned, your IP address will remain on the ban list until it moves off the end of the list, which usually takes a few weeks.

There are no rules about what you will be banned for. It is up to us to decide if someone should be banned. We simply try to make the Eurobrew board a place where anyone can log on and participate in the contest without being intimidated. Things which are likely to get you banned include:

  • Being abusive or offensive
  • Drawing obscene images
  • Continually tagging, scribbling, filling or clearing when other people want to draw

You may get a warning instead of being banned, but this is at our discretion.
